How does BMW ConnectedDrive work?
BMW ConnectedDrive comprises all digital services that intelligently connect the vehicle with the outside world. In addition to telematics services, these also include driver assistance systems, connections for mobile devices, as well as entertainment offerings and traffic services.
Prerequisites for using ConnectedDrive:
- Your vehicle has a permanently installed and active SIM card.
- You have a BMW ID.
- You have added your vehicle to your BMW ID.
Tip: Download the My BMW App to make the most of the services offered. With the app, you can, for example, plan your trips while on the road and send the destination to your BMW in advance.

What is an active SIM card and what is it needed for?
In BMW vehicles from 2013, a SIM card is permanently installed and always active. This SIM card is the basic prerequisite for the use of ConnectedDrive as well as the fulfillment of legal requirements such as the legal emergency call.
For the provision of ConnectedDrive services such as BMW Intelligent Emergency Call, Concierge Service, Teleservice, etc., data is exchanged between the vehicle and BMW via the mobile network and processed at BMW for service provision.

If you do not want to use the ConnectedDrive offers, you can have your SIM card deactivated. Please contact your BMW dealer for this purpose.What do I need a BMW ID for and how can I use the BMW ID?
In addition to an active SIM card, you need a BMW ID to access all BMW ConnectedDrive services.

What is 3G?
3G is a mobile network generation currently operated by all Mobile Network Operators (MNO’s) in Australia. In many regards, 3G was foundation of mobile broadband which supports voice and data services.
Why is the 3G mobile network being shut down in Australia?
Mobile networks operate on a physically limited spectrum of radio waves. Once a certain network generation (2G, 3G, etc) has utilised all available spectrums for that service, it is not possible to add any more. By turning off the 3G network, this allows MNO’s to upgrade these spectrums to the faster 5G network.
What are the indicated 3G network sunset dates for Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone in Australia?
The expected 3G network sunset dates are provided below. These timings may vary depending on the location as MNO’s may begin shutting down individual cell towers earlier.
i. Telstra – June 2024
ii. Optus – September 2024
iii. Vodafone – December 2023Ultimately these sunset dates are within the control of the MNO and BMW recommends contacting the relevant MNO and consulting their published materials for timing of the activity.
Which MNO does BMW use for ConnectedDrive in its vehicles?
Depending on the vehicle model, the SIM card in a BMW vehicle may be primarily connected to either the Vodafone or Optus mobile network.
Vehicles which are connected to the Vodafone network are provisioned to switch to the Optus network after the Vodafone 3G network sunset to ensure connectivity remains active for the maximum possible duration.How does the 3G network sunset affect BMW vehicles?
BMW ConnectedDrive functionality requires a mobile network connection. Depending on the age of the vehicle, the pre-fitted SIM card on certain vehicles requires the 3G network for Voice and Data services. Some newer vehicles require the 3G network for Voice services only with Data services operating on the 4G mobile network. For vehicles that requires the 3G network for Voice and Data services, the following services will no longer be available once the 3G sunset has occurred: Intelligent Emergency Call, BMW Online (News, Weather), Remote Services, Real Time Traffic Information and Concierge Services (if applicable). For vehicles that require 3G network for Voice services only with Data services operating on the 4G mobile network, the following services will no longer be available once the 3G sunset has occurred: Intelligent Emergency Call and Concierge Services (if applicable).
Compatible mobile devices that utilise 4G or 5G networks connected in the vehicle via Bluetooth® (for compatible vehicles), such as phone pairing should continue to operate as normal.Can I upgrade my affected vehicle so all services will continue to work after the 3G sunset?
A hardware or software retrofit to upgrade the vehicle telematics is not available. My Connected Drive services subscription is about to expire, can I extend my services?
Due to the impending 3G network sunset, changes were made to the BMW ConnectedDrive Store to avoid customers purchasing affected ConnectedDrive services for durations after the anticipated 3G sunset dates. Therefore, for vehicles that require the 3G network for Voice and Data services, purchase periods have been adjusted to 6 months instead of 1 year up tom the end of 2023. At the end of 2023, this will be reduced to 3 months. While it is not likely, in the event that a subscription is purchased with a duration that exceeds the 3G sunset date, a pro-rata refund can be provided by BMW by reference to the period of the subscription that is not able to be enjoyed by our customer.
